Making a House a Home

Meet Mark and Andy. Since 2017, they’ve teamed up to make Summit DD’s home modification initiative a resounding success. Together, they’ve completed more than 400 referrals. From young children to aging seniors, hundreds of people with mobility needs can now fully access their homes safely and securely without barriers.

“At Summit DD, we focus on success and a good life for an individual. This is one of the most basic things we can do—it starts with the home you’re living in,” shared Andy Flor, Summit DD SSA Supervisor and lead on this accessibility initiative.

Whether it’s an automatic front door, a ramp, or essential bathroom modifications, many individuals need custom adaptations to live comfortably and independently in their own home. Once an individual is referred into the program, Mark and Andy team up to complete a full in-home needs assessment. Together, they listen to and address all the requests made by the individual or family. From there, Mark recruits from a team of reliable contractors to get the job done.

“Seeing the satisfaction on people’s faces and sometimes seeing individuals tear up because of how accessible their home is now—I can’t put into words what that means. It’s phenomenal! And Mark is an integral part to that success and impact for those Summit DD serves,” shared Andy Flor.

“I’m truly blown away by the number of individuals that have benefited from this program! It is so gratifying, rewarding and even symbolic—opening the door to all sorts of independence that folks have never had before,” proudly shared Mark Campo, Home Modifications Consultant for Summit, Stark, Medina and Portage Counties.

“I focus on the individual. Not the disability. It’s essential to feel heard and be seen. I am grateful to be able to do this job,” Mark concluded.

Earlier this year, Mark was awarded Summit DD’s coveted Russ Pry Community Impact Award after being nominated by Andy. This award honors a person (or group) that is making an impact in the community for people with developmental disabilities through innovative programs, volunteerism, advocacy, or awareness efforts.
